Pollinator Garden.

As you may know, our class has been hard at work doing a bee inquiry. During this inquiry we learned about the importance of pollinators to our ecosystems, as well as to our lives. Without pollinators, we would be without many foods that we need to enjoy good nutrition.

One of the things that the students learned was the harm that certain pesticides are having on honey bees. As a result, they wrote letters to the Premier and to the Ontario Minister of Agriculture to request that they stop using neonics on our crops.

The second act of activism in favour of pollinators that the children have asked to do is to plant a pollinator garden at Clairlea. We are hoping to do this during the week of May 11. I am asking for families to think about donating a few plants. If everyone manages to bring in two or three, we will have enough to make a small garden. I’m providing a list of plants that pollinators enjoy:
  •          Milkweed, goldenrod, phlox, Queen Anne's lace, black-eyed Susan, and asters, Butterfly-weed, Goldenrod, Hawkweed, lavender, heather.
  •       Herbs: Dill, Marjoram, Parsley, Hyssop, Catnip
  •      Many blue and purple flowering plants also.

Thank you so much for supporting your children, your school, and our pollinators!
