Scientist in the School.

Scientist in the School was a huge success... as always! Mme Byrne, the supply teacher, took some wonderful photos which I'm thrilled to share with you all. The subject of the morning was "solids, liquids, and gases". Enjoy:

Scientist Denise starts off with 3 states of matter and students give examples.

Ice vs ice+salt - students record temp at 4 different times. One cup has ice alone, the other has ice and salt.

Students noticed the ice building up around the blue cup, which had ice and salt.

Raphael assists in proving/disproving our hypothesis that ice melts faster than ice with salt.

Students will be bringing home a social studies project that is due June 3rd. The details are as follows...

Traditions & Celebrations Project
Grade 2 Social Studies
-THIS PROJECT WILL BE DONE AT HOME & IS DUE JUNE 3rd -

This term, the Grade 2’s are learning about the different Traditions & Celebrations that exist around the world.  For that reason, they are being assigned a project where they will be given a country, and will be responsible for the following:

Written work (to be written in French):

1. Three (3) celebrations that are celebrated in that country; they must describe in no less than 4 sentences (for each celebration) why the celebration exists and what time of year it is celebrated.
For example: In Canada some people celebrate Christmas.  Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ and it is a time of giving.  Families celebrate on December 24th and/or 25th

2. One (1) tradition for each celebration; they must describe in no less than 4 sentences (for each tradition) what the tradition consists of.  For example; In Canada, some families celebrate by going to church.  For some families, Christmas is not religious and is marked by opening gifts around a Christmas tree.  It is a time when families come together and eat roast turkey, Christmas Yule log and drink egg nog.  Children often leave out cookies and milk for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve.  A few weeks before Christmas, children sometimes write letters to Santa asking for special gifts.

3. Where in the world is that country located; on a map of the world, they must colour and name the country and explain in which continent it is located.  For example, while Christmas is celebrated in many countries around the world, this example refers to Canada. Therefore, Canada must be coloured and the student must be able to name North America as the continent in which it is located.

4. Provide a flag or symbols; students must colour the flag and/or symbols representative of the country.  For example; In Canada we could colour maple leaves, a moose, a beaver and/or provide our red and white flag.

Creative work:

Students must create a poster where they will display all of their work.  Students will be shown a sample of a level 3 (B) project.  An image of this project will be posted on our blog for reference from home.

Written: The written part of the project must be original work (ie: NOT cut and pasted from the internet).  The students have been studying these themes all year and therefore already have the vocabulary. This written portion must be written by the student please. This is not mom and dad’s project! Please avoid online translation tools; they are not accurate.  Students will have the option to use time during computer and library periods, to research and ask for help with minor translations.

Illustrations:
The map of the world should clearly show where the country is located.  All pictures and drawings must be in colour. The title of the poster must be prominent and legible from a distance.

Presentation (to be presented in French):

During the week of June 6th, your child will be responsible for an oral presentation of their work in front of the class.  They will speak about their country, its location, the 3 celebrations and traditions identified.  Students will be prompted by questions, ie: “What celebrations did you learn about and what are the traditions?”

Attached to this sheet, you will find a rubric which will indicate how your child will be evaluated for this project.

* Please note, your child will be offered library/computer time to research and find books on their country, however the project will be completed at home.  Students may ask for help with simple translations. The due date is JUNE 3, 2016.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at the school, via email, or a comment on the blog.

Thank you,
Mmes Paré and Trott.

I think we can all agree that the Spring Concert was a resounding success. The students were sooooo excited to perform that they could barely contain themselves last night! Everyone in the class thoroughly enjoyed themselves and likely had a great time laughing at me trying my hand at the staff dance!
I do hope that you all had as much fun as your children!

Concert costumes

Concert day is almost here! Students will each be given a special costume to wear but it is very important that under the costume, they wear a black t-shirt and black pants (or very dark colour). Please ensure that on the night of the concert, your child is dressed appropriately.

A message from the concert committee:

Dear Students and Families,

Thursday, May 12th marks our annual Spring Concert – Fusion – a celebration of music and dance.  On this day, we would like all Grade 2-6 students to come to SATEC in black pants and a black top.  Additional costume pieces will be provided prior to their performance.

Our show will begin at 6:30pm sharp.  Students need to be at SATEC no later than 6:15pm.  Once they arrive at SATEC, room guides will direct them to their holding room.  Classroom teachers will be supervising the students for the duration of the show.  Parents are asked to stay for the entire concert.  Please do not pick your child up before the end as all students, grade 1-8 will be performing a finale.  The show is scheduled to last approximately 2hrs.

Your child may come prepared with items to keep them occupied while waiting for their performance time slot.  This can include, but is not limited to colouring supplies, books, cards, etc.  Once the concert is over, all students will head back to their holding room where they can be picked up by their caregiver.

PLEASE PRACTISE!

Our Bollywood concert is approaching fast! It's on May 12 and students are to arrive at SATEC at 6:00pm.
Today they learned the finale for the concert - they only had time for one or two runs through it so I've video taped it and have provided a link below. Please please play the video for your child at home so that s/he can practise.

Happy dancing feet!

Hiral dancing the finale.

Bonhommes culturels

The students have been having a terrific time making their traditionally dressed paper dolls (les bonhommes culturels). Enjoy looking at them and trying to figure out which country is being represented!
