Hallowe'en Party

This Friday, October 31, is Clairlea Spirit Day! The students and I have decided that it would be grand to have a party since it's also Hallowe'en. Everyone is invited to wear a Hallowe'en costume to school for the day. I encourage families to send in some food and drink items for the students to enjoy during their party.

Please do not send in foods containing the following ingredients:

  • nuts of any kind
  • eggs
  • soy
  • milk

If you do not celebrate Hallowe'en, your child may wear purple instead to celebrate school spirit. Celebrations and traditions of Canada are an important part of the Grade 2 social studies curriculum. I'm looking forward to seeing some fun costumes and to teaching the students a little about the history of Hallowe'en!

Students must use words that indicate the start (au début), the middle (au milieu), and the end (à la fin) of their retell. They must also use adjectives.

Some useful vocabulary:

  • La dinde
  • les courses
  • les légumes

  • le dîner
  • fêter
  • l'Action de Grâce
  • célébrer
  • la famille
  • la maison
Spelling words for next week are:
  • le lait
  • la paix
  • faire
  • j'ai
  • la maison
  • une araignée
  • j'étais
  • épais

Students should practise the spelling words daily to ensure success.

It is GREATLY appreciated if students return their homework, levelled reading book AND the Ziplock bag by Thursday of each week as this gives me time to mark, assess, and reorganize their materials for the following week. Thanks!

Wishing all who celebrate Thanksgiving a wonderful and joyous weekend.

Homework

It's October and our homework programme is starting.

Every week your child will bring home a book which s/he must read every day, either with a parent or independently.

Your child is also bringing home a homework journal. This week, s/he is to write a retell (un récit) of the book s/he is reading. This must include words that indicate the beginning (un jour, il était une fois, au début), the middle (ensuite, après), and the end (finalement, eventuellement, à la fin). Each part should be at least two sentences and include adjectives. Also your child must include the who, what, where, when, and why of their retell of their book.

Finally, every week on Fridays we will be having a spelling test (une dictée). Your child has written the 10 words for next Friday in his/her agenda. Your child should practise these words every night to ensure success. Your child's spelling journal will come home on Fridays for you to sign. Please return it as promptly as possible.
