Spelling words and homework

My apologies that I haven't yet posted the spelling words and homework for the week.

Here they are. Spelling words:

The homework is to write a concrete poem about a cat. A concrete poem is a poem (that doesn't have to rhyme) which is written in the shape of its subject - so, a cat! Voilà.

On another note - we will be doing a science experiment this coming week that uses toilet rolls. If you have one handy, please send it in. I need a total of 10.

Forest Valley trip

Please remember to dress your child for the weather - it's going be VERY cold! Good boots, thick mittens and a hat and snow pants are a must.
Also, Forest Valley is an outdoor education centre which takes eco-activities very seriously. It is therefore extra important that you send your child with a LITTERLESS lunch.

If you can, find one of each simple machine at home. Draw it and label it. Below are the 6 simple machines with translations below them.

Spelling words and homework for WEDNESDAY January 20.

Due to the P.A. day and our trip to Forest Valley next Thursday, homework will be due next Wednesday and the spelling test will also be on Wednesday. As the week is very short, I will not have the opportunity to read book bags with the children. I will let them keep their book until the following week, after which I will give the students a new book.

Spelling words:

Homework:

Make a list of rhyming words. Place them at the end of silly sentences to make a poem. Please take note that the spelling words mostly DON'T rhyme!

Here's an example:
List of rhyming words: Pleure, coeur, fleur, peur

J'ai vu une fille qui pleure

Je l'ai donné une fleur

Elle m'a donné son coeur

Je n'avais pas peur

It can be as many or as few lines as the children choose - I'm just looking to have them think about rhyming words and how they fit into the construct of poetry.

Toys

A plea from your teacher...
The number of toys coming into class is getting out of hand. Please keep toys at home, particularly Shopkins, Lego, and action figures.
I will begin to confiscate toys from now on as students are too distracted to do their work.

Trip to Forest Valley.

The students are very excited about our trip to Forest Valley on Thursday January 21st. Me too!

Our learning goal is to experience the natural environment at Forest Valley and how to meet our basic needs (shelter, fire, water, and food) outdoors. By doing so, students will gain more understanding of how the environment affects people here in Toronto, and how that compares with other communities around the world.

We will likely be outdoors all day so please make sure that your child is VERY WELL DRESSED for the weather.

I have had 7 permission forms returned so far - Please please send in your permission forms as soon as possible! I am also looking for parent volunteers who would be willing to come and help us out - it will be a fun filled day engaging with nature!!

Surprise spelling test!

Tomorrow the students will have a surprise spelling test (they already know it's coming). The words will be common sight words that your children should know. I will post them after the test so that you can review them with your child to ensure that they have learned any that are misspelled.
